Abstract:
This memorial book to the Jewish community of Witten, Germany has two sections: Section 1 includes alphabetized biographies of 485 Witten Jews who were displaced or persecuted by the Nazis (p. 3-294). Entries include date of birth, maiden name (where applicable), information on parents, and brief biographies. Broader statistical information is given on Witten's Jewish community of c. 1,200 in the 1930s. (Most refugee Wittner Jews fled to the Netherlands. The majority of deportees were sent to Auschwitz. The majority of emigres went to the United States.) Photos are included with some entries. Section 2 includes eyewitness accounts which mention names of persons displaced or persecuted by the Nazis (p. 297-379), and includes a name and a location index of people and places mentioned in the book, where emigrated, deported, etc.
