In 1945 the Red Army discovered a large collection of documents in Wilkanow, a village in Silesia (now Poland). These documents originally came from the archive of the Reich Security Services Headquarters (RSHA). Members of the NKVD brought the material to Moscow and, in March 1946, they were incorporated into the newly created Central State Special Archive, 'Osobyi Archive'. This archive was established as a secret, non-public institution holding records of the Nazi Regime, World War II material seized from European countries like France, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and other sensitive material of Soviet interest. In February 1990 the captured German records edition of the Osobyi Archive was first mentioned to the public. In 1994 these captured German records were microfilmed by the USHMM and are currently available to the public.
