- As of the end of 1994, the Bergen-Belsen archive had collected c. 35,000 names of former prisoners using a variety of sources from all over the world (the SS destroyed the original index cards listing inmate names shortly before liberation). The archive began computerizing this information in 1990, planning to publish a Memorial book in the spring of 1995. Arnold Juergens, the historian in charge of the project, agreed to share the computerized information with the USHMM after publication. A copy of the published Memorial book was received by the Survivors Registry's HVI project in October, 1995. This volume lists c. 25000 names, fewer than the originally stated goal of 35000 due in part to duplicate entries and information that could not be verified. An expanded volume is planned (no date given), based upon contributions of surviving eyewitnesses. It is unclear whether or not survivors are being specifically solicited to corroborate or amend the information contained in the 1995 book. Their input is welcome, however, and they can contact the Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen, D-29303 Lohheide, Germany with any comments. Computerized data for the book was received 1/22/96. -mg

Abstract:
- Alphabetical memorial listing c. 25,000 Jewish and non-Jewish prisoners interned at the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in Germany. Entries include the name of the person at the time of deportation to Bergen-Belsen, date of birth, place of birth (town names only, not countries -- occasionally replaced by last known residence in cases where birthplace was unknown); whether released, and if so when and where from (not always Bergen-Belsen); date of death, and place of death, (where applicable and where known). Prefixes to last names such as 'de', 'van', 'von', etc. have been omitted. Regarding place names, there are occasionally different spellings (variants) for the same location, due to border changes. Umlauts over vowels (e.g. ä and ü) are replaced with the letter 'e' after the vowel. Thus, 'ä' is written as 'ae', etc. A dash (-) in any field indicates that the information could not be determined.
- A revised and expanded version of this book was published in 2005, based upon corrections and additions submitted by persons who used this volume (e.g. survivors and family members) and other sources. Persons who have additional or corrected information to submit are asked to send this information to the GEDENKSTÄTTE BERGEN-BELSEN, D-29303 Lohheide, Germany.
