Database containing names and locations of c. 65000 Holocaust survivors, as well as c. 40000 descendants' names. Survivors' current and previous names but only PERIOD locations are displayed on public-access viewing stations in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Registry staff will forward correspondence for persons wishing to contact registrants. One photograph per survivor may be displayed next to their information. Additional photos, if received, are archived. In 1995 a process was begun to tag individual survivor's records with keywords such as 'Hiding,' etc. Keywords were replaced and expanded using Library of Congress Subject Headings -- the same 'controlled vocabulary' employed by the Museum's Library and Archives and other institutions

Provenance:
In 1981 the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors began collecting names in order to document survivors' lives and to help them locate family and friends. Names and addresses were originally taken from reservation forms and guestbooks from survivor gatherings, later from mass-mailed registration forms. Transferred to the USHMM at its opening in 1993.
