In 1992, the State Museum of Majdanek wrote to the Registry about an item in its collection: "[...] a book of dead inmates, covering the period from June 8 to September 28, 1942. It contains about 7000 surnames, the majority Jews. The book was found partially destroyed, some pages are difficult to read" (David Einsiedler's translation of 10/1/92 letter). In 1997, after a visit of the Majdanek Museum's director, Edward Balawejder, to USHMM, the Registry initiated correspondence about purchasing a complete Xerox copy of this original. A 1/19/99 e-mail from USHMM representative in Poland Alina Skibinska stated that the copy had arrived at her office and would be put in the post shortly thereafter. As of 4/12/00, further information on sources used to compile the death book is not available.
