Abstract:
The Jewish Council of 1933, Inc. was created by a group of refugees from Nazi Germany in San Francisco to reaffirm their faith in democracy and to help each other become a valuable part of American citizenry. It also instituted a "Sterbekasse" to provide death benefits to the families of members. The Council, with 1300 members in 1947, sponsored debates and activities that reflected its commitment to fighting antisemitism and racism. The group dissolved in 1978.
