Abstract:
- This collection is one of the largest and most relevant collections pertaining to the Holocaust at the Israel State Archives. The collection consists of over 2 million pages of immigration files of Jewish refugees to Palestine from Nazi-occupied Europe as well as of Jewish DPs after the war. The time period covered is between 1933 and 1948, during the British Mandate period. Most of the files contain affidavits, in which the new arrivals recount their experiences. The official documents are often supplemented with personal papers and portrait photographs of the individuals.
- The database was commissioned by the German Bundesarchiv in 2003. It has 38,370 names of German-Jewish refugees (including citizens of other countries who were residents of Germany at the time they emigrated to Palestine). Some of these names in this collection and its database can also be found in the collection and database RG67 titled 'RG67: German Consulate in Palestine : names database. [Computer file]'. Entry points are: running number, box number, file number, last name, first name, maiden name, date of birth, place of birth, and collection number.
- The Israel State Archives and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum have discussed the possibility of registering the names as well as digitizing and/or microfilming the over 2 million pages of records of this important survivor-related collection. The Israel State Archives is very much interested in reproducing this collection as the materials are in poor physical condition and difficult to use in the present state. If funding becomes available for the creation of a name database in preparation for microfilming/digitization of this collection, this extensive but partial database, which covers refugees from Germany only and not from other countries in Europe, could serve as an substantial element in a comprehensive names database of Holocaust survivors.
