Abstract:
- Includes registers of the names of over 1,700 Berlin Jews who committed suicide as a result of Nazi persecution or fear of deportation who are buried in the Berlin-Weissensee cemetery (p. 102-161) and of Christian converts from Judaism--also suicide victims--buried in the Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf and other cemeteries (p. 186-189). Although the subtitle of the book states that it covers the years 1938-1945, in fact, the listings begin in 1933. The information is organized by year, and then alphabetically, with name, including maiden name, and dates of birth and death. The book also contains brief biographical sketches and portraits for 43 of these persons/families.
- A spot comparison of names appearing in this work with those in the Bundesarchiv's 2007 editon of 'Gedenkbuch : Opfer der Verfolgung der Juden unter der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft in Deutschland, 1933 1945' reveals that virtually none of the persons who perished before 1936 are included in the 'Gedenkbuch.' After that date, most, though not all, of the names appear in the Gedenkbuch, sometimes with the notation "Freitod" (suicide), often not.
