Abstract:
Book contains two non-alphabetical name registers of children born in Auschwitz Concentration Camp (p. 373-381), the overwhelming majority of whom also have their deaths there recorded. Only three names found in these lists appear to have lived for longer than a year:
The larger first register (p. 373-380, 374 names total), with the heading "Hauptbücher des Ziguenerlagers" [= "Main Registers of the Gypsy Camp"] is cumulatively-numbered and arranged by cumulative prisoner number in adjacent column labeled "lfd.-Nr., H.-Nr." [in full: "laufende-Nummer", "Häftling-Nummer"; = "cumulative number", "prisoner number"] with an "m" or "f" indicating gender. Other columns include "Name" [= "surname"], "Vorname" [= "forename"], "Geburt (Datum, Ort)" [= "birth (date and location)"] and "Tod (Datum, Alter in Tagen)" [= "death (date and age in days)"]. The names in this first register are exclusively of Sinti and Roma (i.e., "Gypsy") children who were born and soon died in the so-called "Gypsy Camp" of Auschwitz-Birkenau, section BIIe. The earliest birth recorded in this register is March 1943, while the latest deaths recorded are from July 1944. The "Gypsy Camp" was liquidated, and its remaining prisoners murdered in the gas chambers the following month.
The smaller second register (p. 380-381, 14 names total), with the heading "Sterbebücher" [= "Death Registers"] is also cumulatively numbered, with an adjacent column labelled, like the first register, "lfd.-Nr., H.-Nr." [in full: "laufende-Nummer", "Häftling-Nummer"; = "cumulative number", "prisoner number"], although the information given in the column does not record prisoner numbers, but rather cumulative 1943 Death Register entry numbers with an "m" or "f" indicating gender. Other columns are identical to those described above for the first register. The names appear to be of Eastern European non-"Gypsy" children.
