Given her date of birth and listing for the high school for girls, I believe she this is the student listed.  In volume 1-4, she is listed as the last name Linkowska.  In volume 5, she is listed as Linkowski.  Both individuals have the same date of birth, and same addresses listed.  I therefore believe this is the same girl.

Very astute of you to notice that the different spellings occurred across different volumes of the Lodz Ghetto Inhabitants Database. The information you've given me leads me to believe, as you did, that the change in spelling was a transcription error rather than being two separate Gustawas. Your instinct on her age is correct as well; at 17, Gustawa would indeed be of an appropriate age to be in Gymnasium. I will happily confirm your research; excellent work, Melany!

I believe Lajb Hersz Linkowski (b 05.16.1895) and Mariem Linkowska (b 02.10.1896) to be Gustawa's parents.  They are of the correct age to be her parents and are listed at the same ghetto addresses as Gustawa with the same change of address dates.  There are two records for Gustawa last name, one as Linkowski and one as Linkowska.  Her fathers name was listed as Linkowski and mothers as Linkowska which further leads me to believe that these were her parents even with the mismatch spellings of the last names as well as two records for Gustawa.  Of further note, her father is listed as having perished in the ghetto hospital on 05.15.1943 from Tuberculosis, recorded in hospital records on 10.05.1943.  Those records listed her father has his birth place being in Malcz, in which I believe may also be the possible place of birth for Gustawa.

Gustawa has different ghetto address listed under both spellings of the last name.  She is listed at Tiziah 12 Flat 20 with a change of address to Kurze 15 on 11.19.1943.  There is also a listing for a change of address from Holz Strausse 36 Flat 39 To Muhl Gasse 15 on 05.23.1944.  This is of interesting note as well, because this means she and her family avoided deportation to Chelmno between 1941-42.  She may have survived at least until the liquidation of the ghetto in 1944.

Melany, your thorough comments on Gustawa's changes of address, possible parents, and fate are greatly appreciated. Based on the identical addresses and flat numbers for Gustawa, Lajb Hersz, and Mariem, as well as Mariem and Gustawa's similar movements documented in the database, it is very likely that these are indeed Gustawa's parents. Your note that Gustawa likely survived until the liquidation of Lodz (and accordingly avoided being deported to Chelmno) because she was still within the ghetto in May of 1944 is spot-on, supported with research, and demonstrates your understanding of the import of the data you are uncovering. Can you find any traces of her after 1944?

My one reservation about your research here is your assumption that Gustawa was born in Malcz; until we have further research to substantiate that claim, I'll have to mark this stage of your research as "possible."

I'm enjoying watching your research grow and develop as you use the site more and more, and can't wait to see what you find next!
