When doing an exact search for Chaja Talerman, three results appear. However, they are not plausible as their birth dates to not fit the timeline for her to be a grammar school student. When using “sounds like,” Haje Talerman is one of the results that is listed. Similarly, when search with just the first initial and last name, Chana Talerman is listed as a result. It is impossible to tell which one, if either of these two girls are Chaja. However, the two of them were likely related as they shared two of the same addresses and also had the same deportation date and transport number.

It is possible that Chaja became Chana in a translational error, or was even a nickname. It is also entirely possible that neither of these two are Chaja Talerman, but by using the Research Project’s resources these are the two most likely possibilities.

It's good to see your noting that it might be possible for the name discrepancy to be a translation or transcription error; that's always one of the biggest things we have to look out for when doing research in this period. A large percentage of the names signed in the album were written in Yiddish, with Hebrew characters, and we're looking in this database at names transliterated into the Roman alphabet.

What I'd like you to do is add all three women you found (the two Chanas and Haje), along with their birthdates and addresses, into stage 1 for Chaja Talerman, then add the information you posted here in the forum to the comment field. I'll mark the entry as possible, and then you and your classmates should try to follow all three names through the next stages and see what you find.

Thanks for your thoughtful research and comments.
