Student Profile:
A. Wajs
Gender: boy
School:
Gymnasium and high school for boys
Gymnasium and high school students were typically between 14 and 20 years old. A gymnasium student in September 1941 was likely born between 1921 and 1927.
The gymnasium and high school for boys was located on Otylii. The street name was changed to Ottilienstrasse when German occupation began in 1939. See
www.lodz-ghetto.com for a map of Otylii and the rest of the Lodz ghetto.

User Comment:
I searched for individuals with the last name Wajs, first initial A, and there were two males who were born within the correct time frame to have attended the Gymnasium and high school for boys: Abraham Wajs and Abram Mendl Wajs. Though they both were the correct age, I believe that Abraham Wajs was the A. Wajs who signed the album, because Abram Mendl Wajs's occupation is listed as schuchmacher, not schuler (student). Moreover, Abram Mendl Wajs died on 30 Sept 1941, just 7 days after the album was signed, making it highly unlikely that he was the A. Wajs who signed the album.

A few comments:
1. I think either of these boys could have signed this name in the album. Abram Mendl Wajs died in October 1941, over a month after the signing of the album, and Abraham Wajs did not live long after that, either.
2. Occupations are rarely strong indicators of whether someone was a student--we've seen a number of people who are listed as another profession who are the most likely candidate to have signed the name in the album.
